Edo Commissioner Enrolls Over 450 Children Into Insurance Scheme

The Edo State Health Insurance Commission (EDOHIC) on Tuesday embarked on a statewide outreach to celebrate Children’s Day, visiting hospitals, orphanages, and vulnerable children across the three senatorial districts.

During the outreach, the Commission enrolled over 450 orphans into the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme (EDOHIS).

The Commission visited five registered orphanage homes and three government health facilities, bringing hope and healthcare support to hundreds of vulnerable children across Edo State.

EDOHIC also settled outstanding hospital bills for several children whose parents or guardians could not afford medical treatment, providing immediate relief to affected families and reinforcing state government’s commitment to universal health coverage for all.

Speaking during the outreach, the Director General of EDOHIC, Mrs. Augusta Ikpea-Enaholo, emphasized the importance of inclusiveness in healthcare during the visits. “Every child deserves a healthy start in life. Today’s outreach is part of our broader vision to leave no one behind, especially those in the margins of society,” she said.

Mrs. Ikpea-Enaholo congratulated the children of Edo State on Children’s Day and praised Governor Monday Okpebholo for his commitment to protecting and providing for the children. “Edo children are important to Senator Monday Okpebholo, who will do all to ensure the children are protected, and we are here to ensure every child is happy,” she added.

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Edo Specialist hospital visited, Dr. Anthonia Inibokun Njoku, appreciated EDOHIC for the visits, saying the children and their parents would appreciate the visit and the gifts. “We thank the governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, who is doing much for Edo people,” she said.

The proprietor of one of the orphanages visited, Sir Nathaniel Cole, thanked the governor and EDOHIC for enrolling about 150 orphans in the orphanage into the health insurance scheme. “This move has brought great relief to the home, especially with medical expenses incurred before now,” he said.

A beneficiary of EDOHIC, Mr. Uromi Eriaremien Ekpenbor, appreciated the governor and the DG for coming to their aid and supporting his family to offset medical bills incurred.

The Director of Public Relations at EDOHIC, Mrs. Omonigho Trimistas, encouraged wealthy Nigerians and philanthropists to visit hospitals and put smiles on the faces of children and parents by paying their medical bills.

The Children’s Day outreach by EDOHIC not only brought cheer but also reaffirmed the Edo State Government’s dedication to child health and welfare. The event set an example of compassionate governance and proactive healthcare delivery.

The Commission’s initiative has also highlighted the importance of health insurance for vulnerable children and the need for more support from individuals and organizations.
