The hike in the price of Tomatoes was caused by ‘Tuta Absoluta’, a pest also known as “tomato Ebola” which ravaged farmer’s produce. A basket of tomatoes which sold from N800-N1200 took a geometric progression of N25000-N40000.
According to the chairman association of tomatoes seller, Mr Abass Mai Tumatur, “Tomato scarcity is nothing new, but it was made worse this year by the invasion of the moth. The rains coupled with the efforts of government have helped tremendously in making tomato available,”
At the Line Dogo (rail line) tomatoes and vegetable market in Kaduna on Saturday, it was a beehive of activities, this is according to The Cable- an online website. There were jubilations by buyers as they experienced for the first time decrease in the price of tomatoes in many months.
